Lower School

Grades 1 Through 5

In our Lower School curriculum, students continue to build upon the concepts and skills they learned the previous year, being challenged to grow year after year, all while intertwining faith and Jesus into their daily lives.

All students attend specials classes such as Art, Music, Physical Education, Library, and Computer/Technology. Religion classes are taught weekly by one of our priests from a supporting parish. Explore the specials under our Student Experience tab.

Critical Thinking Takes Hold

Students learn and apply critical thinking skills to multiplication and division within 100. We introduce unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, etc.) and the idea that fractions are part of a whole, using real-world examples. In literature, the focus shifts to organizing information, developing ideas, and supporting those ideas with facts.

  • Multiply and divide one-digit numbers from memory
  • Representing and interpreting data
  • Learning and using the rules of written language
  • Giving a class presentation using facts and details while speaking clearly

Working with Fractions

Students continue to work quickly and accurately to solve multi-digit multiplication and division problems, and read more challenging text types such as Scripture, short books, and articles. In writing, the focus continues to be organizing information, developing ideas, and supporting ideas with facts.

Grade 5

Ready for Middle School

Students understand and build fluency in the addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. Geometry looks at volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space. In literature, students begin to examine multiple sources of the same event and note similarities and differences in the accounts.

  • Using exponents to express powers of 10
  • Multiplying and dividing whole numbers and fractions
  • Comparing and contrasting stories with similar themes
  • Understanding figurative language
